The U.S. Preventative Service Task Force is recommending women get screened for breast cancer starting at age 40. Experts in Canada believe our country should follow suit in order to save more lives.
The current Alberta Breast Cancer Screening Clinical Practice Guidelines recommend women start screening at 45. Women 40 to 44 must talk to their healthcare practitioner to obtain a requisition for their first screen. After their first screen, they can self-refer for subsequent screening mammograms once per calendar year.
If the Canadian Task on Preventative Health Care follows our neighbours south of the border, routine mammograms for women in their 40s might soon become the new norm.
