What is Gastrointestinal Imaging?
Upper gastrointestinal (GI) imaging is an examination of the esophagus, stomach and first part of the small intestine (also known as the duodenum). Images are produced using a special form of x-ray called fluoroscopy which shows movement through body structures.
During the exam, you will be given a contrast material such as liquid barium to drink. The radiologist will watch as the barium passes through your digestive tract on a fluoroscope, a device that projects radiographic images in a movie-like sequence onto a monitor.
Once the upper GI tract is adequately coated with the barium, the radiologist will be able to view and assess your esophagus, stomach and duodenum. Still x-ray images will be taken and stored for further review.
Your practitioner may order upper GI imaging to help evaluate your digestive system, particularly if you are having symptoms such as reflux, unexplained vomiting, or severe indigestion. The test can also find abnormalities such as ulcers, tumors, hernias, blockages or inflammation.
What to expect
- Please review the exam preparation instructions for the procedure you will be having. It is important that you follow them carefully.
- Our technologist will position you on the exam table.
- You will be asked to drink a contrast material. This will allow the radiologist to watch on the fluoroscope as the solution passes through the part of the body being examined.
- During the exam, the technologist may move the exam table to allow the radiologist to view different angles.
- The radiologist will provide your practitioner with a detailed report, usually within 24 hours.
